Curriculum Updates
Grade Four | Grade Five |
Mathematics - The Grade 4 students are starting a new unit in Measurement - length, perimeter and area. The students will be looking at length, width, height, depth, and thickness to describe linear dimensions of an object or figure. They will also look at perimeter (distance around a figure measured in length - measured in units of length) and area (the amount of surface an object or figure occupies - measured in standard square units). | Mathematics - The Grade 5 students are finishing off their unit in Fractions and Decimals. They will be starting a new unit next week in measurement - Length, perimeter and area. They will learn that there are relationships among the units used to measure length. They will also look at perimeter and circumference to measure using units of length. They will also learn about perimeter and area formulas that provide a method of measuring these attributes by using only measures of length and finally how perimeter and area are related. |
Literacy
Writer's Workshop - The students have all finished their Silver Birch book and continue to work on a number of writing activities to go with the book (e.g. letter writing, newspaper articles, interviews, movie advertisements, diary entries). We have focused a lot on "voice" and how the author portrays "voice" in his/her writing. The students have been working on finding examples of "voice" in the text of their Silver Birch book. We will also be looking at adjectives (specifically emotions) and how we can write about these emotions using descriptive language.
Reading Response - students continue to write responses to their reading. They will be answering specific questions relating to their Silver Birch book choice. We will focus on making inferences and using evidence from the text to support their answers.
Spelling Stories
Students' spelling stories will be due weekly - please see "spelling stories" to see when your child's due date is. The instructions are pasted to the back of the front cover of the notebook. Please ensure that your student follows it correctly. It will take awhile for them to get the hang of it. Thanks for your support!!
